WHAT IT IS
Lye is a strong alkali used for thousands of years in soapmaking and in the preparation of many foods. For example, Lye is responsible for giving traditional German pretzels their characteristic texture. In many parts of the world, green olives are cured with lye. Hominy, a Native American dish, is made by soaking dried maize kernels in a lye solution. Traditionally, lye was leeched from the ashes of hardwood, but today it’s made from the electrolysis of table salt (sodium chloride).

WHY WE LOVE IT
Since we only make soap using traditional cold-process methods, lye is necessary for the soap making process. All soap (even soap made thousands of years ago) is made with lye, but no lye remains in the finished soap.

WHERE WE GET IT FROM
Our lye is food grade lye and is made in Germany.

CERTIFICATIONS
